Driving Change: Rethinking Tyre Management in Logistics

In the logistics industry, where operational efficiency and sustainability often feel like competing priorities, tyre management has emerged as a powerful lever for driving both cost savings and reducing environmental impact. At Port Express, we’ve been re-evaluating our approach to tyres, not just as a cost item, but as a key component of our sustainability strategy.

Why Tyres Matter More Than You Think

For a fleet like ours, tyres are more than just a purchase, they’re an investment in safety, efficiency, and the planet. With each HGV using up to six tyres per axle and covering thousands of miles every year, the choices we make have ripple effects across fuel efficiency, carbon emissions, and waste generation.

Balancing Performance and Sustainability

We’ve recently taken the step of combining premium tyres with remoulded alternatives to extend the life of our tyres while reducing environmental impact. Premium tyres, like those from Bridgestone, offer excellent durability and fuel efficiency. Paired with Bandag’s high-quality remoulds, we’re able to lower our overall tyre consumption without compromising on performance.  This hybrid approach isn’t just about reducing costs, it’s about embracing a more circular economy. By repurposing premium tyres into remoulds, we’re diverting materials from waste streams and giving our tyres a second life.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, we’re exploring data-driven solutions, such as telematics integration, to monitor tyre performance in real time. These insights will help us optimise wear patterns, reduce downtime, and enhance the overall efficiency of our fleet.

A Call to the Industry

Tyres might not always take the spotlight in sustainability conversations, but they’re a critical piece of the puzzle. As an industry, we need to move beyond the “buy and replace” mindset and start thinking in terms of lifecycle management. By working together – manufacturers, fleet operators, and customers—we can drive meaningful change.

At Port Express, this is just the beginning of our journey. I’d love to hear how others in the industry are tackling sustainability challenges in tyre management and beyond. Let’s share ideas and drive real change collaboratively!
